Publication History of ‘The Mark of Zorro’

Before the publication of the book, in the pulp magazine all story weekly, The Curse of Capistrano came out as a five serialization. One year after the launch of the novel, the same story was adapted as the silent film ‘The Mark of Zorro’ whose lead cast was Douglas Fairbanks playing the role of hero Don Diego Vega. The title of the film was adapted from the hero’s habit of marking enemies or surfaces with three swords which formed the letter “Z”.

The movie was an enormous success which led to public demand for more Zorro stories. Due to huge public demand, the writer of the novel, McCulley proceeded with a new series of over 60 serialization stories in Argosy All-Story weekly in 1922. Later all these stories were collected and published under the title Zorro Rides Again, The Further Adventures of Zorro, and The Sign of Zorro.

Seeing the huge public interest and taking advantage of the rising popularity of the character of Zorro in movies and prose, and with the motive of not confusing interested customers by using the same title of the novel, in 1924, the five-part story was republished as a novel entitled ‘The Mark Of Zorro’ by Grosset & Dunlap. Moreover, after that, each edition of the book was published under the same name ‘The Mark of Zorro’. In 1940, that means exactly after twenty years of the launch of the first film adaptation and sixteen years after the publication of the book, 20th Century Fox published a new “talkie” version of ‘The Mark of Zorro’. In this new release, the character of Don Diego Vega was played by Tyrone Power. In 2009 the film earned high popularity and critical success and was named to the National Film Registry by The Library of Congress. The movie was defined as culturally historically or aesthetically significant by the Library of Congress. The 1940 movie has been referenced in various Batman comics as the film that the actor Bruce Wayne watches on the night his parents are murdered.

The Setting of the Book

The book describes the story of Californio Don Diego Vega, alias Senior Zorro, in the company of Bernardo who is his deaf and mute servant, and Lolita Pulido who is his lover as they oppose the villainous Captain Ramo and Sgt.
