Smriti Zubin Irani is an Indian politician. She is also a former TV actress and producer. She is currently serving as the Minister of Women and Child Development in the Union Cabinet of India. From 2019, she is working as Union Minister. She is known as a prominent leader within the BJP, as she has defeated Rahul Gandhi in the election of Amethi.

Personal Life

She was born in 1976 as Smriti Malhotra, the daughter of a Punjabi, half-Maharashtrian Hindu father named Ajay Kumar Malhotra with a Bengali Hindu mother, Shibani Bagchi. Smriti is the oldest of her two sisters. From a very young age, Smriti has been a part of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh as her grandfather was an RSS swayamsevak. Her mother Shibani Bagchi was serving as a member of Jana Sangh.

Education

Smriti completed her schooling at the Holy Child Auxilium School, New Delhi. The school is run by Catholic nuns. Thereafter, she opted for graduation from the School of Open Learning at the University of Delhi.

In 2019, she confessed that she had given her first-year B.Com. exams, but didn’t complete the three-year degree course.

Marriage and Children

In 2001, Smriti Malhotra married a Parsi businessman named Zubin Irani. The couple welcomed their first child in the same year, a son called Zohr.

In 2003, they welcomed their second child, a daughter called Zoish. Smriti also has a stepdaughter named Shanelle. She is the daughter of Zubin Irani from his previous marriage to Mona Irani, who was a beauty contestant.

Political Career

In 2019, she stood for an Indian general election against Rahul Gandhi, who was then the country’s principal opposition leader and the president of the Indian National Congress from Amethi.

Earlier the Amethi constituency had always been represented by the Gandhi family for four decades.

In 2011, Smriti Irani became a member of the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat. Thereafter, in 2019, she won the election from Amethi against Rahul Gandhi and became the youngest minister.

She was only 43 years when she was sworn in as a Cabinet Minister.

Smriti Irani can speak several Indian languages, which include Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, and Punjabi, as her paternal family has Punjabi and Maharashtrian heritage. On the other hand, her maternal family has Bengali heritage.

Acting Career in Television

Irani participated in the beauty pageant Miss India in 1998, she couldn’t reach the top 9 and was eliminated with Gauri Pradhan Tejwani.

In 1998, she debuted in the song “Boliyan“, an album of “Saawan Mein Lag Gayi Aag“ with Mika Singh.

In 2000, she débuted in a TV series called Aatish and Hum Hain Kal Aaj Aur Kal on Star Plus.

In mid-2000, she won the best actress role for Tulsi Virani in Ekta Kapoor‘s production Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi on Star Plus.

However, in 2007, she had a fallout with Ekta Kapoor and she left the show. She was then replaced by Gautami Kapoor. But, she made her comeback in 2008 with a special episode, reconciling with Kapoor.
